Andrew Koepke and his wife were in their thirties couple having no luck trying to have children. After Andrew and his wife got married, they tried to get pregnant but failed, and so adopted a girl from Haiti. She was about four when they got her, and had a lot of issues, having lived in poverty and in an orphanage. Andrew and his wife hired a tutor for their daughter, which gave them some relief, and met another couple who had adopted two children from Haiti. A couple years later, the wife got pregnant with twins—a boy and a girl. The adoption took a lot of money, and the couple had to refinance their house to pull out some equity. Then the wife became ill and needed surgery which was draining their finances. Plus, the company Andrew was working for was folding, so in order to pull themselves up, they asked employees to buy into the company.
When Esther, the adopted child was then, her biological father found her, and gave Andrew some money to put in a trust fund which was to be given to the girl upon turning 21 or would go to Andrew upon her death.
Since Andrew was having financial problems, he arranged for his adopted daughter’s death, reasoning that it would solve both he and his wife’s problems, as she was sick, and he was broke.
As if the money was cursed, more and more things happened to Andrew and his family, to the point where he began to believe it was because he was using the blood money, as he called it.
The man he hired to kill Esther and make it look like a hit and run, learned he had received more money from the trust fund then Andrew had told him, so decides to blackmail Andrew. Andrew meets him, and tries to kill him, but the police arrive in time, and take both men away.
His guilt and the visions of Esther compelled him to turn himself in.
